1884: Sandford Fleming

A Brief History of Standard Time

 

The inventor of world standard time, Sandford Fleming, was born in 1827 in the manufacturing centre of Kirkcaldy in Scotland. After six years of formal schooling and another six years of apprenticeship in a local land surveyor's office, he emigrated to Canada in 1845 at the age of eighteen. Fleming settled initially in the Ontario village of Peterborough, where he drew and sold local maps on his own lithography stones.
