Dubai is to the Middle East what Hong Kong is to Asia: a capitalist boom town buzzing with activity. Most visitors to the region stop here for at least a day to browse the shops, eat in the restaurants and soak up the atmosphere of a city that oozes wealth and a general air of self-satisfied confidence.
Instruction
Nestled between the languid Southern Gulf waters and sweeping desert, cosmopolitan Dubai is blessed by a superb year-round climate, and with its numerous opulent hotels, towering attractions, peerless shopping, stunning entertainment and commercial opportunities, makes Dubai an ideal destination for the traveller enjoying a luxury vacation or business trip.
Dubai's cityscape is undergoing dramatic redevelopment, with a number of record-breaking projects - including the planet's tallest five-star deluxe hotel (the Burj al-Arab), largest man-made marina (Dubai Marina) and largest man-made island (Palm Islands) - in progress. The Dubai Waterfront project is set to add 500 miles of man-made waterfront filled with canals and hotel-rich islands: a development the size of Manhattan!
Vast investment in luxury golf and entertainment resorts - such as Dubailand and Dubai Golf City - means the city is set for even more dramatic growth as a prestige destination, and Dubai's strategic Middle East location has made it popular as an international convention city.
Recognised as one of Asia's premier shopping cities, Dubai's tax-free shopping attracts visitors with its range of quality goods, notably gold and jewelry, electrical items and stylish fashions from Europe. The city's fine department stores, malls, boutiques and souks are complemented by a first-rate airport shopping centre and even retail festivals - adding a dash more entertainment to an already heady retail scene. Dubai is a world-class venue for many top sporting events: the Dubai Desert Classic Golf Tournament, the Dubai Tennis Championships,
Sevens Rugby Union tournament, Emirates off-shore Power Boat Grand Prix, and the UAE Desert Motorsport Challenge amongst them. Perhaps the city's blue riband sporting event is the world's richest horse race, the Dubai World Cup - a thrilling night time spectacle contested at the Nad Al Sheba track that attracts the finest thoroughbreds from around the globe.
Amongst Dubai's foremost outdoor attractions are its breathtaking golf courses: layouts such as Creek Golf & Yacht Club and the Emirates Golf Club set a memorable challenge. Take a desert safari or try the unusual desert pastime of ice skating at the rink in the Galleria shopping mall.
With its surfeit of great restaurants, bars, live music venues and nightclubs, Dubai offers full-on evening entertainment, after which you can retire to truly luxurious accommodation. Dubai offers over 400 luxury hotels, meeting the needs of the most discerning guests. Many of the world's most prominent hotel chains operate star-class hotels in the Emirates, among them being the seven-star Burj Al Arab. Even the standard facilities are exceptional with swimming pools, tennis courts and fully equipped health centres coming as standard. Top hotels generally offer a choice of fine restaurants, with several waterfront hotels having excellent beaches and extensive watersports facilities.
Attractions
There isn't much in Dubai that isn't newly glistening. Even the traditional souks that attract thousands of visitors each year are packed with up-to-the-minute gadgets and the latest designer wear.
Split into two by a long creek, the city is best seen from a water taxi, giving an opportunity to admire the modern, palatial architecture: the hallmark of a successful Arab state. Or indulge a little more on an aerial tour over this picturesque city and waterfront by helicopter, airplane, or hot air balloon.
Dubai is a treasure trove of historical attractions and there is perhaps no better place to delve into the land's past than at the Dubai Museum housed beneath the 180-year-old Al Fahidi Fort in Bur Dubai. The Bastakiya district is a step back in time, with traditional courtyard houses and wind towers. Sheikh Saeed Al-Maktoum's House is one of the oldest houses in the city, as well as one of the best examples of traditional Middle Eastern architecture. Built entirely of stone along medieval Fatimid lines, the Jumeirah Mosque and its two minarets are unmistakable. Other historical attractions in the city include the Grand Mosque, the Juma Al-Majid Cultural and Heritage Centre, the Dubai Heritage Village, the Tower of Arabs and Majil's Gallery.
Of course Dubai has a multitude of superb outdoor attractions, from championship quality golf courses and spas to water sports and desert adventures to be enjoyed. Spectators can enjoy a host of premier sporting events such as the world's richest horserace, the Dubai World Cup at Nad Al-Sheba; the Dubai Desert Classic Golf Tournament, the Dubai Tennis Championships, Rugby Sevens, the Emirates Grand Prix powerboating; the UAE Desert Challenge, and of course, camel racing.
Enjoy a fascinating Abra water taxi ride across the Dubai Creek to the myriad shops at Deira's Shindagha quarter famous for its textiles and electrical goods. Dubai has been globally recognised as 'The Shopping Capital of the Middle East,' with all manner of local, regional and imported goods available. At Wafi City one can buy everything from carpets to cars, haute couture, perfumes, jewellery to electronics, furnishings and sports gear. Vibrant shopping festivals are also a special feature of the retail scene in Dubai, and it offers one of the premier airport shopping facilities of any world airport.
Dubai is popularly referred to as the 'City of Gold' because of its famed Gold Market, and shopping in all its forms - from vast malls to bustling markets - has long been one of Dubai's principal attractions. One popular legend suggests that the name 'Dubai' may have derived from 'Daba,' meaning a prospering or flourishing market. Dubai's famed markets are located on both sides of the creek, with the colourful Spice Market enticing shoppers with its exotic aromas, and the enormous Gold Souk dazzling with every form and standard of precious metals and glittering jewels.
Families have much to enjoy in Dubai, from the 18-hectare Wonderland Park to Magic Planet at Deira City Centre shopping mall. The Wild Wadi Waterpark boasts 24 interconnected water rides, including the high-speed 'Jumeirah Sceirah'. Other children's attractions include the Dubai Zoo, the Encounter Zone, Jumeira Beach Park and Hatta Rock Pools.

Entertainment
Picture the vast fantasy world of the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, and then double it. That is the scale of Dubailand, just one of the city's major new entertainment resorts that are being built to draw 15 million visitors to Dubai by 2010.
Featuring six themed worlds, or cities within a city within a city, and occupying close to 200 square kilometres, this vast entertainment complex is symbolic of Dubai's rapid transition from desert outpost into the entertainment and business capital of the Middle East, offering visitors the time of their lives under sunny skies.
Dubai serves up its entertainment on a grand scale, where shopping is also firmly in the entertainment category. Retail spectacles such as the month-long Dubai Shopping Festival draw millions each year, and the city's stunning shopping precincts, golf complexes and entertainment resorts loom large in this dazzling city.
Dubai's superb all-year round climate makes it an ideal destination for adventure and outdoor fun. If you are after an action-packed vacation, you can have a desert adventure by jeep, camel or horseback, culminating in a moonlit Arabian desert barbecue; get beachside with watersports such as boating, fishing, diving or waterskiing, or tee off at any of the city's superlative golf courses, perhaps enjoying the thrill of floodlit thoroughbred and camel racing in the evening.
Dubai hosts the world's richest horse race, the Dubai World Cup, plus blue riband golf, tennis and sailing tournaments - so you can get to see many of the world's top sports stars in action. Thrill seekers can enjoy full throttle fun at the Dubailand Autodrome and awesome sand skiing on Dubai's dunes, or for something more sedate there is unique wetland birdwatching and the noble sport of falconry to be enjoyed in and around Dubai.
But if you are not coming to Dubai for an activity holiday, then there is plenty of nightlife and cultural entertainment to enjoy, from numerous native and international restaurants, bars, discos and live music concerts to English language cinemas, theatre and city tours. The Dubai Marina is the ideal place to unwind over a meal or drinks at an elegant waterside restaurant, or why not hop aboard a wooden-chow for a dinner cruise of the creek, passing Dubai's waterside attractions en route?
Dubai's nightlife is as diverse as the many cultures that call the city home, with an abundance of stylish and cosmopolitan venues to enjoy an evening's entertainment. Dubai's large expat community gather at friendly venues like the Irish Village, The Agency Wine Bar and the Champions Sports Bar, whilst Al Diwan, Club 21, Layalina, Zumorrod, Abaya and Al Meghanawati are among the popular Middle Eastern-style nightspots in Dubai. Here, traditional Arabian-style entertainment and cuisine is given a contemporary edge.
Deira and Umm Suqueim are famous for upscale Dubai hotels - many of them featuring popular night spots such as the Copacabana nightclub at the Four Points by Sheraton Bur Dubai, and Ginseng, at Wafi City. Popular Western-style nightspots include American Dream, Crystal Room, Rockafellas, Rumours, Scorpion and The Chameleon Club.
Dubai is also brimming with entertainment for the family: headline attractions include the Wild Wadi Waterpark, SplashLand and WonderLand, Dubai Zoo and Encounter Zone.

Restaurants
Dubai may be best known for its fabulous shopping, luxury hotels, outdoor attractions and buzzy nightlife, but equally appealing is its diverse range of fine restaurants.
Dubai's thriving culinary scene offers more than 450 restaurants, with pretty much every flavour from around the world represented in this melting pot of cultures. An increasing number of chefs with stellar international reputations have now set up restaurants in Dubai's top hotels - Gordon Ramsay at the Hilton Dubai Creek, Viktor Stampfer at the Ritz-Carlton and John Wood at the Burj al Arab amongst them.
Leading Arabian and Persian restaurants include Automatic, Shabestan, Shahrzad, The Persian Garden, The Al Khayam Lounge and Layali Lubnan. The Marrakech at the Shangri-La Hotel and Shoo Fee Ma Fee in the Madinat Souk are well-regarded Moroccan venues. The Blue Elephant Thai restaurant boasts opulent interiors and fine food; top choices for Indian cuisine include the Ashiana and Khazana, tastefully adorned with lantern lights and bamboo screens, the Thattukada at the Palm Beach Rotana Inn and the Antique Bazaar at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, whilst Sho-Cho is the hottest Japanese venue in town right now.
Top seafood choices include the Aquarium at the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club and the Fish Market at the Hotel Inter-Continental; and Dubai boasts an abundance of European restaurants, particularly Italian: the Bice Ristorante in Umm Suqueim offers first-class Italian delicacies, fine service and alfresco dining; the elegant Cubo Pasta restaurant at the Ibis Hotel receives rave reviews; Venezia, the largest restaurant in the Middle East, is beautifully designed like an Italian village square, complete with gondola rides, musical entertainment and an extensive selection of fine wines. La Moda's plush setting and delicious Italian dishes makes it the place to be and to be seen in. Other top choices include Da Vinci's in Garhoud and the all-day Fontana diner.
If you're not staying there, it's still worth taking a trip to the Rydges Plaza Hotel for its excellent choice of restaurants, including Billy Blues steakhouse and Texan fare at Cactus Cantina.
Dubai is also famous for its Friday brunches, where sumptuous buffets cover the whole spectrum of international cuisines, some lasting all day. Competition is intense and great promotions often apply: some venues offer free use of facilities, such as swimming pools, as part of the Friday brunch package.

Shopping
From the world's biggest shopping mall to the intimacy of the souk, from dazzling jewellery, gold and designer fashions to a simple bag of spices, from Arabian art and crafts to a Western-style tailored suit, Dubai's array of shopping opportunities is unparalleled in the Middle East.
Dubai showcases leading brands from around the world, with an increasing choice of fashion and jewellery imported from Europe and elsewhere to complement locally produced luxury goods. Expect to find a vast choice of beautiful carpets from across Asia; high-carat gold and exquisite precious stones, fine porcelain, fragrant perfumes and electrical goods, all at great prices: shoppers in Dubai benefit from the city's tax-free shopping policies and low import duties, meaning much merchandise is available for less than in its country of origin.
Dubai's rapid development as a luxury travel destination is due in large part to its classy shopping. The Dubai Mall, part of the Burj Dubai development, is set to become the world's biggest shopping mall when completed in 2008; the Emirates Mall will boast the world's largest indoor ski slope under its roof, and the spectacular Dubailand complex is adding another dimension to Dubai's shopping and entertainment options.
This jewel of the Middle East offers some of the world's most palatial shopping malls, notably on the Bur Dubai side of the Creek. A few of the premier malls for luxury goods and designer labels are the pyramidal Wafi Mall, The Village on Jumeriah Beach Road and the Twin Towers on Beniyas Road and the BurJuman Centre on Trade Centre Road. Shop here for native and international designer fashion, gifts and jewelry and enjoy entertainment for the whole family.
The Deira district is a shoppers' delight: Deira City Centre features 280 stores, a definite 'shop till you drop' experience, whilst the Al Bustan and Abu Hail Shopping Centres, the Galleria and Hamarain Centre sell leading brands of fashion, watches, jewellery, sports goods and more under one roof.
Dubai's oldest shopping centre, Al Ghurair Retail City, offers over 100 stores selling exotic perfumes, elegant clothes and electrical items as well as refreshment centres. Another eminent shopping area is the Jumeirah district, featuring an assortment of fashionable malls including Magrudy's Shopping Mall, the Beach Centre, Markaz Al Jumeirah, the Town Centre and Jumaira Plaza, whilst Lamcy Plaza offers plenty of fun for the family.
Just outside Dubai is the UAE's second largest shopping centre, the Ibn Battuta Mall, where five themed shopping 'zones' take their design inspiration from China, India, Persia, Morocco and Eygpt.
Dubai is also famous the world over for its souks. The Gold Souk sells high-carat gold jewelry, gold bars and bullion coins, plus dazzling necklaces, earrings and bracelets. Neighboring the Gold Souk is the Spice Souk, where aromatic spices from all over the Middle East are brought together. For the best perfumes in Dubai, visit the Perfume Souk, the home of thousands of seductive aromas. Dubai is also one of the best places outside Iran to buy Persian carpets.
The Al Fahidi Street sells all manner of electrical goods, Cosmos Lane for rich fabrics from East and West. Just outside the city centre is Karama, the place for bargains. The Al Mulla Plaza is another place to shop if you are looking for something out of the ordinary and a little less expensive than the upscale shopping malls.
